CAPE Faculty
The Center for Advanced Pediatric and Perinatal Education (CAPE) faculty members are skilled in re-creating the human interactions, stressful conditions and complex environmental cues that occur during actual neonatal, pediatric and obstetric crises. A team of debriefing and content experts with experience in neonatology, pediatrics and obstetrics conduct each simulation program.
Louis Halamek, MD – Director of the Center for Advanced Pediatric and Perinatal Education (CAPE)
Louis Halamek, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, and the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (by courtesy) at Stanford University. He is a graduate of the Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr. Halamek completed residency and chief residency in pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center followed by fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Stanford University. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both general pediatric medicine and neonatal-perinatal medicine, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Halamek is an attending neonatologist at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.
Dr. Halamek is the Director of the Fellowship Training Program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine and is committed to the incorporation of technology into medical education. His professional appointments include: Neonatal Resuscitation Program Steering Committee, Board of Directors of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, Editorial Board of the Journal of Simulation in Healthcare and the Executive Committee of Safety Across High Consequences Industries.
Julie Arafeh, RN, MSN – Assistant Director of Training and Research
Julie Arafeh has been employed as an obstetrical nurse in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including five years as a CNS for a free-standing OB intensive care unit and more recently as Perinatal Outreach Coordinator responsible for development of educational outreach programs at Stanford. Julie earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana and a Master’s degree in Perinatal Nursing from Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society, AWHONN and AACN. Julie is on the editorial board of the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing.
